You’d have to be a princess, wouldn’t you? Wearing pretty dresses, being good, always watching out for the crown. Princess Isabella doesn’t think that’s such a great idea. She is constantly expected to do what the king and queen expect of her. But she would rather climb trees, wear pants, and play in the mud with the little pigs. “Princesses don’t climb trees!” her father scolds her and punishes her with kitchen duty. Too bad Isabella finds that too much more exciting than her princess life.

Cornelia Funke’s amusingly illustrated picture book turns stereotypes upside down with a wink and encourages children to go their own way. Will Isabella and the king make up in the end?
